Marketplace Marketing

A significant percentage of of internet traffic goes to the big marketplaces.  The operators of these marketplaces have the leverage to drive millions of targeted users to their sites.  Leveraging their marketing activities is not only effective but cost efficient. Marketplaces such as:

  • Ebay

  • Craigslist

  • Amazon

  • Groupon, Living Social, Google Offers and other daily deals sites

  • Groups such as Yahoo Groups, forums, and specialty marketplaces

Key Marketplace Techniques

The first step is to implement the right strategy.  What works for one marketplace may be considered spam on another.  Banishment from one marketplace due to spam can ruin your reputation.

  • Marketplace Selection - Depending on the product or service offered each marketplace will yield either a positive or negative ROI.  For example paid advertising on Amazon will work for products but not services whereas services convert better on Yahoo Groups.  Each marketplace has different opportunities available to the marketer and the proper selection will be critical to success.
  • Content - Both the body and the subject has to be relevant to ensure the recipient does not unsubscribe or mark the mail as a 'spam' which lowers the reputation of the sender.
  • Tracking - Are you using your own server or a dedicated 3rd party service?  Depending on this your success rates will vary greatly.
